Overview

Those familiar with AMG's reputation should know what to expect from this tuned version of the EQE53 electric sedan: extra power and performance. The dual electric motors provide a whopping 617 horsepower—or up to 677 horsepower with an optional performance package. The suspension and brakes are also upgraded to improve handling, and visual tweaks include different wheels and a rear spoiler. The battery is the same as the standard EQE's, but the AMG's extra power and performance potential means its estimated range drops to 225 miles per charge. And, as usual, one can also expect a significant price premium for the privilege of owning a car with an AMG badge versus a Benz.

What's New for 2023?

The AMG EQE53 is a new addition to the lineup for 2023, joining the standard Mercedes-Benz EQE, which is a smaller sibling to the flagship EQS electric sedan.

Although Mercedes sells a less expensive and less powerful EQE43 model elsewhere in the world, the United States market has just one trim: The EQE53. The car comes standard with many niceties, including a 15-speaker Burmester stereo, interior ambient lighting, in-dash navigation, wireless smartphone charging capability, and a host of driver assistance features. We would recommend splurging on the Dynamic Plus package to unlock the maximum 677 horsepower, but otherwise, we think the EQE53 is plenty well equipped as standard.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

The EQE53 has AMG-specific electric motors in the front and rear that provide all-wheel drive. They pump out significantly more grunt than the standard Benz-branded EQE model, with 617 horsepower on tap in the base configuration and 677 horsepower available with an optional Dynamic Plus package. At our test track, the EQE53 rocketed to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds. Handling is precise thanks to a standard rear-wheel steering system and the air suspension system never firms up to the point of discomfort, rounding off sharp impacts easily and keeping the cabin well isolated from the road.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The EQE53 has the same 90.6-kWh battery pack as the standard Benz model, and its higher performance diminishes range a bit. The EPA says the EQE53 should be good for 225 miles of driving per charge but we managed to drive for 230 miles on our 75-mph highway fuel economy test route. DC fast-charging capability is standard.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

The EQE53 is rated for 74 MPGe city and 73 MPGe highway, which is slightly more efficient than the larger and heavier EQS53. On our 75-mph highway fuel economy route, we recorded 77 MPGe. For more information about the EQE's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The AMG EQE offers the same interior package as the standard model with a few twists. The seats are unique to the AMG version and there are various performance displays added to the information screens. Because EV powertrains are quiet, there are several fake sounds available to increase the auditory drama both inside and outside the car. Unfortunately, they're all fairly cringeworthy and have us missing the low burble of the brand's V-8 engines.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The EQE's standard infotainment setup is includes a vertically oriented touchscreen with a separate display for the driver's gauges, leaving the rest of the dashboard to be covered by your choice of wood or patterned plastic trim. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard with either infotainment package.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The EQE is offered with several basic driver assists as standard, but more high-tech equipment is part of the optional Driver Assistance package. For more information about the EQE's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
  • Available lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
  • Available adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature
