Based on the mid-size Mercedes-Benz GLE-class, the AMG versions have been tweaked by the company's performance division for zestier results. All three models (the GLE coupe is reviewed separately) have unique suspension tuning as well as increasingly powerful engines that range from the 385-hp twin-turbo V-6 on the GLE43 to the 577-hp twin-turbo V-8 on the GLE63 S. Both models have a host of desirable options and high-tech assists. However, they also share an outdated platform and an aging interior design that distance them from most of the newer products from Mercedes.

What's New for 2017?

The 2017 Mercedes-AMG GLE-class carries over essentially unchanged. Despite the non-AMG version being completely redesigned for 2020, the all-new Mercedes-AMG GLE53 won't go on sale until late 2020.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GLE-Class starts at $69,145 and goes up to $111,195 depending on the trim and options.

While both the 550-hp GLE63 or 577-hp GLE63 S provide heart-pounding performance, the more restrained GLE43 still delivers sufficient thrills for significantly less money. However, buyers should monitor how much they spend on frills, as options can quickly drive prices north of $80K. We'd keep costs in check with a few tasteful and useful features, including the Parking Assistant package with a 360-degree camera and automated parking, massaging front seats, and leather upholstery. These add-ons introduce another level of luxury and tech to an already attractive package.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Likes: Snorty exhaust note, snappy shifts, satisfyingly quick.
Dislikes: Assertive shifts can be overly aggressive at times, occasionally harsh ride, regular GLE43 rolls more and grips less.

The GLE43 is motivated by an enthralling 385-hp twin-turbo V-6 with an irresistible exhaust note. The GLE63 and GLE63 S feature a handcrafted twin-turbo V-8 that develops 550 and 577 ponies, respectively. All engines send that power through a standard nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, all enhanced by AMG—Mercedes-Benz's esteemed performance division—for superior sportiness. The last GLE43 we tested accelerated from zero 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, and that was before Mercedes retuned the engine to make another 23 horsepower. While we haven't tested the GLE63, the GLE63 S rocketed to 60 mph in 3.8 ticks.

All three GLE models have commendable dynamics, if a rather stiff ride that can hamper their composure on rougher roads. Every version has an AMG-specific air suspension with adaptive settings. The last GLE43 we drove also lost a comparison to the Mercedes-Benz E400 wagon. Unsurprisingly, the wagon handled and rode better. That GLE43 wore the optional 21-inch wheels, which elicited sharp impacts from driving over harsh bumps in the road. Otherwise its ride quality was wonderful and its suspension was compliant. That translated to topsy-turvy body motion on curvy sections of road. Although the regular GLE43 can't compare with swifter and more powerful rivals, its sporty demeanor and brisk acceleration make it more compelling versus pure-luxury alternatives.
